DEAR DOCTOR EZEUGWU: Is an annual wellness visit to a cardiologist necessary?

DEAR PATIENT: Yes, of course! A wellness visit is “a visit” to evaluate you for the early detection and prevention of some medical and non-medical problems that may derail your health unknowingly. It is generally designed to prevent problems, and is different from your usual visit to the doctor with your existing medical problem.  Just as your car has recommended maintenance services (such as quarterly oil/filter changes in some cars), your body also needs at least an annual doctor’s check up to keep you up and about in a more excellent way.  So if you have not been doing this, call your doctor and make an appointment.  Remember that an ounce of prevention is even better than a pound of cure. You can also combine your wellness visit with a regularly scheduled medical checkup – ask your doctor!
