Diabetes Q & A

What causes diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when your body doesn’t have adequate levels of insulin to help blood glucose (sugar) absorb into cells for energy. As a result, blood sugar levels spike, which can damage vital organs and tissues all over your body.

Type 1 diabetes, nicknamed “juvenile diabetes,” often begins in childhood, but it can also develop later on due to pancreatitis or another serious issue. This type of diabetes occurs when your pancreas doesn’t produce insulin.

You can develop Type 2 diabetes at any point in life. Type 2 diabetes means that your body produces low levels of insulin or that your body becomes resistant to the insulin you do make.

In many cases, Type 2 diabetes is linked to being overweight and following a sedentary lifestyle. Your risk of Type 2 diabetes is also high if you have low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which is the good cholesterol that protects your heart.

How is diabetes diagnosed?

Whether you’ve been managing diabetes for a long time or if you’re just starting to experience symptoms of diabetes, you can undergo comprehensive diabetes management at Just Heart Cardiovascular Group Inc.

Dr. Ezeugwu spends time evaluating your overall health and may conduct any of the following screenings:

  • Blood cholesterol testing
  • Oral glucose tolerance test
  • Diabetic neuropathy assessment
  • Random or fasting blood sugar test
  • Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) blood test
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD) testing, such as an angiography

Dr. Ezeugwu needs to know about all diabetes-related symptoms you’re experiencing, including numbness in your hands and feet, frequent urination, or unplanned weight loss. These tests and analyses not only help confirm diabetes, but also assess how diabetes may be affecting your heart and circulatory health.

What is the treatment for diabetes?

Your diabetes management plan is designed to help you keep your blood sugar under control, prevent complications, and protect your heart health. Dr. Ezeugwu may recommend:

  • Prescription medications to manage Type 2 diabetes
  • Insulin injections or a pump
  • Increased physical activity
  • Weight loss management
  • Dietary counseling
